Hotel Staff Panic Button for the City of Sacramento

On Tuesday January 14th, Sacramento City Council approved a new law that will require all hotels and motels to provide staff with personal workplace panic buttons. Sacramento’s tourism industry is expanding rapidly and the city wants to make sure that it is taking care of those employees who are the backbone of this key economic driver. Chris Rak, president of Unite Here Local 49 (a key Union in Sacramento), is pleased with the passing of the new law. He shared: “Too many housekeepers have to worry every day about inappropriate guest behavior that could be lurking behind any hotel room door. We’re glad the city of Sacramento is taking steps to make these jobs safer.”  The Bluetooth panic buttons must be provided free of charge to all employees who are required to clean guest rooms in the absence of other hotel staff. They must also be portable, wearable, and functioning properly. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that these conditions are being met. Workplace panic buttons are intended to be activated if there is an emergency, or the threat of one, and will alert designated hotel security staff of the distressed employee’s location. Officially effective July 14, 2020, hotel employers have about six months to implement the new hotel worker safety solution. If an employer does not comply, they may be subject to a fine between $25 and $2500 per each day the violation ensues.

If a housekeeper was to enter a room in the middle of the night, they may be confronted with hotel guests who are irate or intoxicated. If they did not confirm they are safe after the scheduled room visit, our lone worker monitoring app will immediately notify a monitor of a possible emergency. The monitor will be sent the exact location, and any other details the housekeeper has previously supplied, such as voicemails and work itinerary.
